MAX C. HEMPT
INDUCTED 2013
Hempt was one of the most influential men ever in Pennsylvania harness racing. His Hempt Farms in Mechanicsburg, PA was (and is, under his grandson Max J.) the “home of the Keystones,” with the farm’s young horses carrying the trademark name. Hempt Farms produced Horse of the Year Keystone Ore, and Max owned Hambletonian winner Stenographer and the great trotting mare Fancy Crown, among countless great horses he bred or owned. Hempt gave countless hours in the service of organizations such as the Hambletonian Society and the Harness Racing Museum/Hall of Fame, for many years serving on the Advisory Committee with USHWA’s Hall of Fame Screening Committee. He was also a noted amateur driver despite his imposing size (and a world-class polo player), and was involved in racing management at The Meadows with sometimes-partner Delvin Miller.
